S&R Corporation reached a new high in its history by being awarded its largest contract ever. The awarding authority for the project is the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. The contract was awarded based on a low bid of $105,863,537.70. The scope of the project is the reconstruction and realignment of Interstate 95 and the associated ramps in the vicinity of Bridge 550 over the Seekonk River in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The contract will replace two bridges, rehabilitate two bridges and add three new bridges. The centerpiece of the project is the replacement of Bridge 550 over the Seekonk River. The existing structure is a multi span steel plate girder bridge. The new bridge will be a single span steel arch structure, spanning 350 feet over the Seekonk River. The steel arch superstructure will have a metalized coating. The massive concrete substructure is made up of 16,000 cubic yards of cast in place concrete. The architecture of the structure will have art deco elements to blend with significant landmarks in the surrounding neighborhood. LED light fixtures will installed to accent the bridges architectural lines. The project is a joint venture endeavor. S&R Corporation’s joint venture partner on the project is Pihl, Incorporated of Copenhagen, Denmark with a regional office in Canton, Massachusetts.
